What is Japanese Knotweed?

Japanese Knotweed (Fallopian Japonica) was brought to the UK in the 1800s with the innocent intention of introducing a new ornamental garden species. Unfortunately, at the time, the negative impact that this would cause across the UK was widely unknown and in no time this invasive plant had spread across many landscapes, overrunning any native species that it came across. Now, with time and knowledge on our side, we know that Japanese Knotweed can grow up to 10cm a day throughout the summer months and aggressively works its way into pipes, brickwork, tarmac and even concrete – incidentally causing damage to property, roads, and gardens. Furthermore, the roots of Japanese Knotweed can permeate up to 3 metres deep and many more across, causing damage to any foundations and drains that may be in its path.

Japanese Knotweed is now recognised in the UK as a “highly invasive species” by the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981), as “controlled waste” by the Environmental Protection Act (1990) and those who fail to remove it quickly and effectively from their premises could be issued with a notice and/or a fine under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act (2014). If you spot Japanese Knotweed on or around your property, you must contact specialists to remove this plant species safely and effectively – which is where we at Henderson & Taylor come in.

Our Effective Japanese Knotweed Removal

Invasive, non-native plants such as Japanese Knotweed have become a difficult and expensive burden for developers, councils and landlords. However, an outbreak of Japanese Knotweed need not be a barrier when effectively managed by competent industry professionals, such as us at Henderson & Taylor. Our safe and cost-effective Japanese Knotweed removal services will get to the root of the problem to achieve a complete remediation solution with specialities in:

  • Excavation and incineration.
  • Excavation and removal to landfill.
  • On-site bund treatment.
  • On-site cell burial using geotextile membranes.
  • Reduced excavation and herbicide treatment.

Using several techniques, we can remove Knotweed and incinerate it in situ, thereby considerably reducing costs by removing expensive landfill charges. This ‘zero to landfill’ solution is both secure and environmentally friendly as well as reducing the treatment time and minimising the disruption caused by multiple vehicle movements to and off-site.

The Benefits of Japanese Knotweed Removal

Preventing Structural Damage

Japanese Knotweed is known to damage building foundations, drains, concrete and more due to its aggressive root system. Removing Japanese Knotweed eliminates these risks and prevents further structural damage to your property.

Maintaining Property Value

Removing Japanese Knotweed enhances property aesthetics and structural integrity. Removing this invasive plant can also boost and maintain the value of your property for long-term satisfaction.

Complete Compliance

Entrusting professionals to remove Japanese Knotweed ensures compliance with legal requirements and regulations. Failure to address Japanese Knotweed can lead to legal issues and fines.

Environmental Protection

Removing Japanese Knotweed from your premises supports biodiversity and native plant growth by preventing its spread into natural habitats. This helps to promote better ecological balance and sustainability.

Japanese Knotweed FAQs

How do I identify Japanese Knotweed?

Japanese Knotweed can be identified by its creamy-white coloured flowers that bloom between late August and mid-September. The plant’s flowers grow up to 10cm long and 0.5cm wide alongside the leaf foliage, creating a dense appearance that often blocks the stems from view.

Can I get rid of Japanese Knotweed myself?

There are only two techniques that are proven in Knotweed removal: herbicide treatment and excavation. Therefore, we highly recommend calling in specialists to undertake the removal of Japanese Knotweed instead of tackling the problem yourself.

Can I get a mortgage if my property has Japanese Knotweed?

As long as removal has been arranged by a professional company, it should be possible to get a mortgage if your property has Knotweed. That said, we recommend speaking to your mortgage lender for further clarification.

Is Japanese Knotweed poisonous?

Japanese knotweed is not poisonous and is not dangerous to touch.

Is allowing Japanese Knotweed to grow a criminal offence?

Yes, it is an offence to allow Japanese Knotweed to grow. If you knowingly allow the plant to spread into the wild you could be found guilty of a criminal offence.

How do you dispose of Japanese Knotweed?

As Japanese Knotweed is classed as “controlled waste”, it needs to be carefully removed and either burnt on-site or taken to a licensed landfill site or incineration facility.
